Birth Stories

Birth Stories
The Day Jason was Born
By Janice Koepnick
The baby and mother's names have been changed to protect confidentiality. The story was written to be read to this boy as a child. This was the first birth I attended, before any of my doula training.
All the snow melted. Even the ice melted. Crocuses and tulips were coming up.
Ada your mother, phoned me. I decided to come over to convince her she was in labor. It was about 6:30 pm. Your brothers went to their grandparents house.
This was the first prayer answered, your mom did not have to be put in labor by chemicals, her body did it naturally. (If a mother goes two weeks past her due date, she it given chemicals to start labor.)
We had a nice time, enjoying tea and a banana cake with cream cheese icing, listening to relaxing music, and looking at your parent’s wedding pictures. I gave your mom a massage.
It was a very peaceful night. We timed the contractions and your mom knew exactly when it was time to go to the hospital. Your dad was having coffee with the guys, but he came quickly when your mother told him it was time.
“Janice tells me I’m in labor,” she said.
Your mom phoned friends and grandparents to tell them she was going to the hospital and you would be born.
She put everything in order and did the laundry. Your brothers had sat on ketchup at McDonalds so their jackets needed washing.
When your dad arrived he had a shower. After the shower the contractions were three minutes apart. He began to pack the car madly ,like a person fast forwarded on a video.
As we sped off down the street your mom realized she didn’t have her glasses so your dad went to get them.
My girls , age 6 and 10 were so excited.
Your mom was a bit worried that we would not get a room at the hospital because they had told her on the phone that all the birthing rooms were busy so we prayed we would get one.
It was 10:00 at night.
When we got to the hospital your dad dropped us off while your mom and I registered. Your dad looked funny carrying the bright birth ball, and two heavy duffle bags.
We were sent to triage waiting room, where we could hear other women breathing, only separated by curtains. One side was full so we were led to the other side.
After they assessed your mom they immediately moved us to a beautiful birthing room. This is the second way we saw God move in your birth. Your mom was so relieved and thankful.
Immediately they checked your heart to see if it was Ok . The nurse who came to check your mom every 15 minutes was a Filipina named Zorina.
We continued to apply pressure to your mom’s back during contractions. This is because you had to change positions and your head pushes against your mom’s back. So applying pressure at this spot seemed to help.
After midnight, your mom mentioned that you would be born on your brother’s birthday.
Your mom leaned on the birth ball for awhile.
We also listened to music, and I told stories about your mom climbing mountains because going through labor is like climbing a mountain. We also talked about how her body was about to bloom like a flower. We prayed for you, to be who God wants you to be.
Your mom felt God’s peace surround her. She was able to completely relax. She knew exactly what she needed.
Your dad read bible verses and stayed close to your mother. We took turns massaging her back. We did this for about five hours. Your mom and dad were getting tired. I was too excited, I tried to rest but couldn’t.
After a while the nurses got everything ready. Your mom had to breath differently like a person blowing a feather.I breathed with her.
Your mom knew when it was time to push. After a few pushes you came out.
“Now I know why the baby is the flame” she said. Time stopped. We were in awe. You were purple covered with white stuff. Your skin was wrinkled and dry on your feet. We admired your long skinny fingers, perfect for playing violin or piano.
“It’s a boy!” I said. I smiled. I was so happy and amazed.
“I love you! I love you!” your mother said as she held you. “ I’ve been waiting to meet you.”
Your mother was radiant. Her ponytail came out and she looked more beautiful than any model or movie star you have ever seen.
Your dad was right there to welcome you, hold you, and be close to your mom. He thoroughly enjoyed being with you and your mom in this special time.
You took a few breaths and cried.
I wondered how the nurses could be so serious? They see so many new babies that it does not seem
special anymore? There you were, a new life right in front of our noses! A few minutes later another person came in.
“Who are you?” asked your mom.
“ I Am ze Doctor Rogazinzka!” She said importantly with a thick polish accent. She started giving orders immediately.
The doctor had missed the whole birth! However the nurses had known what to
do.
You had to be weighed. You did not like that. They put you in a cold metal scale. You cried when you were taken away from your mother. I don’t blame you, I don’t think most adults would enjoy being put naked on a cold metal thing either. Especially after being in a snuggly ,perfect place.
They also put you under a heat lamp. I watched to make sure you would not fall out.
We took turns holding you. We took pictures.
“We couldn’t have done it without you,” your parents said to me.
“It was such an honor and privilege to be here!” I replied.
That night April 7 you and God gave us a gift that is absolutely priceless – hope.
I had a new hope that I could do something I had never done before- provide support and encouragement to couples having a baby. I also had a renewed hope in the power of friendship and the power of God.
Your mom had a renewed hope that she could trust her body the way God made it, that she could do something she had never done before- give birth in a more natural way.
Thank you Jason.

Humour

Sole Mates

What the difference

A girl went to the hospital and asked to see the 'upstern'. You mean the 'intern' said the nurse.
I guessso, I just wantancontamination.' You mean an 'examination.' Well, anyway, I want to go to the 'fraternity" ward.' You mean 'maternity ward. '
'Upstern, intern, contamination, examination, fraternity, maternity' , what's the difference.
I ain't demonstrated for four months and I now I'm stagnant!
